The girls officially started swim team this month. Before school lets out, they have practice twice a week & we have gone a few times. It's kind of nice because it's not as crowded while school is in session so it was really good practice for Sophie. Which she needed since they had their first swim meet this past Saturday:
It was just the intra squad meet, but we have a huge swim team so there were still a lot of people there. Sophie was so excited for her first meet & Sadie was excited to swim competitively again:
Sophie was the very first race of the day & she wasn't even nervous! I guess it helps that you have your big sister to help you warm up & show you the ropes:
Just like Sadie was last year, she is swimming in the 5 & 6 year old age group & the only strokes they are allowed to swim is the freestyle & the backstroke. First up, the backstroke. There were only 5 girls in the race but the other 4 were 6 year olds so she was definitely the youngest. I tried to take a couple of pictures of her but they turned out blurry because she was in lane 1 on the other side of the pool:
But let me tell you, she had the biggest smile on her face when she got out of the water:
And to our surprise, she got 2nd place! We were so proud of her :)
Next up, Sadie swimming the backstroke:
That's her in the middle lane in the red swim cap. The white swim caps are for anyone on the swim team & the red swim caps are for those who swam on the state team. It made it so much easier to find her with her red cap on!
She swam awesome for her first race back, but she got 6th place. Not bad considering there were over 20 girls & the majority of them are 8 year olds. She was definitely the fastest 7 year old & was pretty close to knocking a few 8 year olds off. We'll see if she can keep it up this summer!
It was a quick meet, but they had a little downtime with friends:
Then it was time to race again. Since Sadie bumped up to the 7 & 8 year old division, she is old enough to swim any stroke now so she was excited to try the butterfly:
Her form looked beautiful but she definitely needs to work on her speed! To our surprise, she said this was her favorite race of the day even though she isn't the best at it.
Finally, it was time for the freestyle & Sophie was up first. She hasn't quite gotten her dive down yet, but she tried:
Look at her finishing strong! That girl never gave up. There ended up being 8 girls in this race & she got 4th, which again shocked us! I was worried she wouldn't be able to make it that far, much less place!
Sadie was up next:
with another strong swim. Closer to 25 girls this time & she got 5th. Similar to last time, she was the top 7 year old but she has some fierce competition with the older girls. Can't wait to see if she can improve her time this summer. At least they both had fun & enjoyed seeing friends again:
