Sadie has always had a love for the water & we have had her in swimming lessons off & on since she was 6 months old. She went pretty consistently during the school year until she started kindergarten. We have always taken off during the summer but we have a pool in the backyard & we usually travel to a beach, so she spends all summer in the water. Leisurely she LOVES swimming, but guess now we will see if she likes it competitively. She tried out for FASST, Frisco Amateur Summer Swim Team this past weekend & made it!
You have to be 5 to try out, so she could have last year but we thought she was too young & I wanted her to enjoy her last summer before kindergarten started. I thought she would kind of forget about swimming since she started school & didn't get to lessons anymore, but she hasn't. So we started up weekly lessons again in January just she could have a few refresher swims before she tried out. Basically they have to be able to swim 25 yards by themselves, unassisted. She has never swam that far in 1 direction because she has never been in a pool this size & she couldn't touch the bottom, so I didn't know if she would be intimidated. Of course she wasn't! She got in there & dominated that pool:
We kept telling her this wasn't a race, she just needed to swim the best she could & she did it! She easily passed so looks like she is officially on the summer swim team for Frisco!
She is excited but I am all sorts of emotions. I am proud of her & know she will do great, but it's one more thing on our schedule. This is by far the most expensive & most time consuming sport she has done so far so we will see how it goes. They have practice twice a week at night in May & when school gets out, they have practice Monday - Thursday every morning with a swim meet every Saturday. And meets usually start at 7:00 & last all day. What the heck did we just sign up for?! The good news is that you can do as much or as little as you want, so we will give it a shot & see if she likes it & go from there.
Since she made the team, we got her registered & then they fitted her for her team swimsuit:
She also got a team t-shirt, a swim cap & fitted for fins:
Looks like this is really happening! Guess it will be fun to experience something new together as a family this summer.
