Sadie has been running with Bryan & I since she was born. Actually, I should clarify that, probably 6 months old. We've always had a nice jogging stroller but technically you aren't supposed to run with infants until they are a little older & can actually hold their head up. She has ran a lot of races with us & a lot of practice runs at home. She has probably ran more than Sophie because it was easier to push the single jogging stroller back in the day of only have 1 child. Yes, we have a double stroller, but it does get heavy!
Sadie has always been full of energy but in the last several months, probably since she started soccer, she has started running more. She always says that she wants to practice running & she has literally been running laps around our neighborhood. Needless to say when I heard about the latest run this past weekend, I thought it would be a great opportunity for her to enter her first official race. Since it was Mother's Day weekend, they had a race on Saturday called Run Like a Mother. It was a 1 mile fun run & 5k. I signed Sadie up for the 1 mile & planned on running it with her.
She was so excited! We talked about it all week & finally, on Friday night I took her to the Frisco Running Company for packet pick up:
She was used to this because we have picked up so many packets for Bryan & I! But let me tell you, usually these bags aren't that great & mostly have papers inside. This one was awesome! And I love the shirts for the 5k - they were technical shirts (dry-fit) instead of the cheap cotton ones. The kids just got gray cotton ones, but she didn't care.
The next morning I had to wake her up early & she chose her breakfast very carefully - she wanted a blueberry pastry crisp:
She said she would eat her banana at the finish line!
Sadie & I went early while Bryan & Sophie came a little later. Here we are at the starting line stretching & warming up. She was a little shy once we got there & saw the crowd so we got towards the back:
We lucked out & saw a friend from MOPS, Logan. That really boosted her spirits & the 2 of them ran the entire race together. And let me tell you, she did amazing!
She ran the entire time without stopping. Well, kind of. There was a water station set up at the half way mark & she thought she was supposed to stop since every else was. But she took the water, gave it to me & then took off again. I ran the last half of the course with it in case she needed it but she never did. Even at the end when she was getting a little tired, she somehow came up with a burst of energy & sprinted the straightaway. Bryan got some great video of us at the beginning of the race & at the finish line:
As soon as we finished, she got her ribbon & then headed to the snack table. She definitely earned her banana:
And then we headed off to the fun part. They had bounce houses, coloring & snacks for the kids so they had fun checking everything out. Sophie was excited to finally be with us again:
I'm hoping she will want to be a runner like the rest of her family! There are always a lot of races going on, but this was a fun one & it was a smaller race, mostly women. Plus I loved the shirt & the swag bag! I'm thinking this may need to be a new mother's day tradition!
Most of all, I am so proud of Sadie for signing up for something & sticking to it. I really thought she would get tired during the race, run slower or try to stop but she blew me away with her attitude. I can't help but brag because I was shocked when I saw the results:
She ran the 1 mile in 10 minutes & 38 seconds! There were 14 girls in her division, females 6 & under, but all of them were 5 & 6, except for Sadie & 1 other little girl who were 4. But Sadie surprised us & got 5th place! Not bad for her first time :)
Like I said, we had so much fun & I could not be any prouder of her. Go Sadie Go!
