Homework

Sadie's pre-school had their first Donuts with the Director this week & I was excited to attend with some of my friends. A few times of year, they offer coffee & snacks while we get to visit with the school director & learn something about our children's curriculum. Our first meeting was about "Handwriting Without Tears", which is the curriculum her school uses to teach children how to write. It is also the curriculum that FISD teaches. Since I have no background in teaching, this is all new to me & I thought the information session was very informative. For instance, I knew children learned the uppercase letters first, but I didn't know why. And now I do :) They really explained what they are teaching at school & what we can do at home to help. That same day, Sadie came home with:

It had notes about the curriculum, homework ideas & sample wooden pieces to help form their numbers, letters, shapes, etc.:

It even had a page for them to start practice writing their name, uppercase on the front & name case on the back. It is in a plastic sleeve, so we used a dry erase marker so she could erase & start back over after she finished:

I was pleasantly excited to see how well Sadie responded to her folder. I explained that it was her homework folder & we would work on homework in the afternoons while Sophie was sleeping. I have always had a hard time getting her to concentrate & want to work with me at home, but apparently whatever they are doing has started a spark:

She was so proud of herself! I am really excited to work with her this year. I feel like she excels socially. She is an absolute extrovert, loves playing with others & thoroughly enjoys all of her extracurricular activities, but academically, I feel like she is a little behind. Or maybe not behind, but she definitely doesn't excel in this area yet. She has her first assessment this month & we will have our first parent teacher conference the first week of November so I am really curious to see where she is at. Either way, I look forward to spending some extra time with her this school year as she continues to learn & we do her "homework" together.
