It was pure coincidence that Relay for Life was happening at Conroe High School last Friday night while we were in town & my parents were participating with some of their friends from church. We have participated in this event years ago when my dad was battling cancer & seemed only appropriate to participate again since my dad & my husband are cancer survivors!
We got there just in time for the opening ceremony & they had all of the survivors walk a lap first:
They might have let Sadie walk with them even though she isn't a cancer survivor :) All of the survivors had purple shirts on while everyone else wore white:
The next lap the caregivers were invited to walk with their survivors so we got to join Bryan:
Technically Sophie was only a mere thought at that time, but I was definitely Bryan's caregiver during my pregnancy & Sadie was around (even though she was still in my belly) to help keep Bryan motivated!
My mom also walked with my dad:
The guys also had a cheering section from their church friends:
It's funny because I think I have pictures of us doing Relay for Life years ago with the same cheering section doing the same wave!
My mom also bought some luminaria bags for some of the immediate members of our family who had cancer:
Sadie really had a fun time playing with these bags! Unfortunately, we didn't get to stay late enough to see them lit. With two little ones in tow, we had to leave around 8:00. For those who don't know, the event usually runs all night & there is constantly someone walking on the track at all times. It is a really fun event & very family friendly. Sadie probably would have stayed all night if we would have let her! I enjoyed participating in an event that is obviously near & dear to my heart. In fact, I am chairing the same event in Frisco for Frisco Women's League later this month. If you want to learn more about that event, check out their website:
On a random note, I saw a lot of people that I knew from Willis & Conroe growing up, including an old friend, Holly. We were cheerleaders together at Willis High School back in the day! Who knew that she had a little boy born the exact same day as Sophie :)
