We never got Sadie dental insurance the first two years of her life, because honestly, she barely had any teeth :) But once she turned two, we knew it was time to start taking her in. To be honest, we have always been really good about brushing her teeth at night, but we haven't always done it in the morning. We kind of just get ready & go downstairs to eat breakfast & who wants to brush their teeth before breakfast?! A few weeks ago, I noticed her breath was kind of stinky, so I knew it was time to make sure we were doing the full dental routine two times a day. Luckily, our persistence paid off because Sadie had a clean check up today!
She walked right in like she knew what she was doing. Although it probably helped that they had a tv set up with Doc McStuffins on:
In case you are wondering whose hand she is holding, that would be her father. We made the trip to the dentist a whole family affair!
She was a little nervous, but holding Daddy's hand helped.
The hygienist was great & she did a fabulous job calming any fear that Sadie may have had. She showed her all of her cool tools & made everything about princesses. She started by holding up a little mirror & counting Sadie's princess teeth to see how many she had:
Then she was ready to polish Sadie's teeth, so she explained that she had to clean them so they would sparkle like the princesses. The spinning toothbrush seemed a little scary, so she thought she would try it on her finger first before she opened her mouth:
And then it was time to rinse her mouth out with water (which she was excited about) but she was unsure of the vacuum, so she let her Dad try it out first:
After her cleaning, she got a princess toothbrush which they used to wipe fluoride on her teeth & then they flossed. I have to admit that we have never flossed her teeth before. I guess that's something we will have to start doing now that is older. Finally, the dentist came in to take one last look but she said everything looked great! Apparently our night time routine had worked, but I think we will definitely work harder on the morning routine.
As you can see, Sadie ROCKED her first dentist appointment! She did not hesitate to let them do anything nor did she shed a single tear. I was so proud of her & I hope since we started at a young age, she won't be afraid as she gets older. I think it also helps that we made brushing her teeth such a big deal at home. She loves brushing her teeth, especially when she got her first "big girl" toothbrush & toothpaste in her stocking from Santa last Christmas. Our little secret - Bryan & I made up a song that we sing every night while she brushes & we kind of sway back & forth while she brushes :) Don't laugh but I will share the song because I am sure I will forget it one of these days. It is sung to the tune of "Row Your Boat":
Brush, brush, brush your teeth
gently as can be,
brush them up,
brush them down,
brush them in between!
That's it - very simple, but we sing it every night while we dance & she loves it. And she has the pearly princess whites to prove it!
