Weekend Get Away to Orange County

Every year Bryan & I choose an out of town Longhorn football game to go to & this past weekend was our weekend away. We usually choose one of the bigger games somewhere we haven't been & this year UT played USC in Los Angeles. Last time we played USC was in the National Championship game back in January 2006, so this was definitely a re-match we were excited about!

We got both of the girls to school last Thursday then we headed straight to the airport. We have friends that live in Newport Beach & they graciously offered us their house instead of staying in LA. Best decision ever! Not only did we have a free place to stay but it was in a cozy little beach town right on the water. So relaxing! They live 2 blocks off the water on Balboa Peninsula where 1 side is the marina & 1 side is beachfront. They ride bikes every where so as soon as we got there, Cindy was waiting for us with our bikes ready to go:

Seriously, it is the cutest little town! All of the houses are small little cottages right next to each other & the vegetation there is beautiful. I mean, look at the picture above - that's riding down one of their alleys.

We went to lunch & spent the afternoon at Lido Village. They had live music & Bryan relaxed while I shopped:

Of course we headed to the beach also & watched the surf:

Later that night we met up with Jeff & went to Cruiser's for dinner. It's called Cruiser's because everyone cruises up there on their bike to eat. Seriously, they even have a bike parking lot:

The next morning we went for a run on the boardwalk:

That's an action shot I tried to take while running. Don't know if you can spot Bryan but he has a grey shirt on & is way ahead of me! Afterwards,  Bryan surprised me & had a day planned for us. Cindy let us borrow her daughter's car, which just happened to be a convertible Volkswagon Bug:

We had so much fun cruising around & the girls would have loved it! We even took the ferry from Balboa Island back to Newport:

We went to Pelican Hill, which is a resort in Newport. Bryan has golfed there before & he loved it so much he brought me back, but instead of golfing, we spent the day at the spa! We both took our time relaxing in the separate areas before we met up for a couples massage. Then we went to the pool for lunch:

We had the best view! The pool was a huge circle & on one side you could see the golf course & on the other side you could see the ocean. I think Bryan might have missed the golf course:

That night we went to dinner with Cindy & Jeff and then we had some more friends join us. Cindy & Bryan worked together for years so they had a great time catching up & taking pictures to send to former colleagues:

And then we got a group shot when Jenna & Joel got there:

The next day we woke up ready to go! Cindy's daughter is a freshman at UT & she flew in the night before to go with us to the game. It was an hour drive to LA & then we met up with friends again at the Texas Exes tailgate:

before heading inside:

Last time we played, we were at the Rose Bowl so it's always fun to go to a new stadium. Especially one with history like this!

Luckily all 6 of us got to sit together & we had great seats about half way up on the 30 yard line. We may have been sitting in USC territory but we held our own. Cindy was a fun cheerleader to sit by:

She cheers just as loud as me! I am sure you have already heard or seen by now, but it was an AWESOME game! We were expected to lose & we were just hoping for a good game & we definitely got one. We lost in double overtime 27-24 but it was well worth the trip. See, we are even smiling after the game:

We went back to Joel's car & tailgated some more while missing traffic & then we drove to Seal Beach & hit up a late night pub for dinner & drinks. It ended up being a really late night but the perfect way to end our trip:

On Sunday we slept in & then biked back in to town for brunch before we headed to the airport to head back home. It was a great weekend get away just the two of us. It's always refreshing to have a few days away from the girls, we had fun seeing friends & the game was unbelievable! Let's hope the Longhorns can keep up that momentum for the rest of the season!
