Our final morning in Honolulu we woke up to something special:
Do you see that rainbow?! It was so much prettier in person - I don't think my picture shows how vibrant it was.
After breakfast, we packed up our suitcases & were ready for the next part of our trip. On the way, we spent the morning here:
I know the girls are a little young so they didn't really know where we were going, but Sadie has really gotten into history this year so we thought she would enjoy it. We got there early so we had time to walk around the museums & explain everything to the girls:
Then it was finally time for our tour to begin. We got to watch a 20 minute video about the history of Pearl City which was very helpful for the girls & then we boarded the boat to head out to the memorial:
I think the girls really understood what happened because they could see the ship below the water & see the oil in the water:
It got more emotional when we walked to the back of the memorial:
To be honest, I have been here several times but I didn't realize that veterans who survived the bombing of Pearl Harbor could choose to be memorialized here also. That's what these names are in front:
They had pictures of divers going down to the sunken ship with urns so they could be memorialized with their peers. I honestly had no idea! Just goes to show you that you can learn something new every time you visit somewhere more than once.
We saved our leis that my mom had delivered at the airport so we could bring them here:
Originally we planned on putting them in the water but then Sadie noticed that people were leaving them at the memorial so she wanted to do that:
But I let them have my lei for the water. You aren't allowed to put the string in the water so we cut the flowers off & let the girls drop them in the water:
I think everyone else enjoyed seeing the girls do this also. The flowers floated so delicately in the water:
Obviously there is a lot more at Pearl Harbor that you can do, but this was probably all that they had the attention span for at this age. Next time I think it would be fun to do the submarine with them. Sadie really enjoyed it. She is a very curious child so she was really interested in learning what happened & asked a lot of questions. I hope whenever she finally learns about it at school, she will remember our time here:
