Where do I start - it has been a crazy month. And I'm not even talking about Covid-19! We've had some major changes in our family & I will post about some of that later, but I will start with why I have been quiet for the past 2 weeks. We were celebrating spring break Hawaiian style:
We usually do our big trips during the summer, but I have a milestone birthday next week so I thought it would be fun to plan a trip for my birthday. We started planning last year & for the first time, we kept it a secret from the girls! Seriously, they had no idea. Even though we have been shopping & getting ready for summer, they didn't put it together that I had been secretly packing their suitcases & getting things ready to skip town. On Thursday morning before spring break, we snuck in there room & woke them up. They thought they were going to school but instead we headed straight to the airport:
We had a direct, 8 1/2 flight from DFW to Oahu & the girls did great! We had 1 snafu (Sophie spilled her entire apple juice on my white jeans, so I sat in wet pants the whole flight) but other than that, the girls were easy. They watched movies, ate snacks & that was it! They had never done more than 5 hours on a flight but I am now confident that they could fly anywhere.
When we arrived, my mom surprised the girls by having leis for us:
Such a fun surprise! Thanks Mom!
After we got our luggage, we checked in at our hotel. We decided to spend the first part of our trip in Honolulu on Waikiki Beach. Sadie loved the pog (passion fruit, orange, guava) welcome drink:
We grabbed a quick dinner & then headed to bed after a long day but we woke up the next morning ready to go. Our first adventure was to hike Diamond Head:
It was a long hike up but the girls did great! They were excited & full of energy so we made it up faster than we thought:
I have hiked this several times so I knew what to expect but the girls loved the views from the top. On one side you can see the crater insider the volcano & on the other side you have a panoramic view of Honolulu & Waikiki Beach:
When we made it back down, the Dole pineapple truck was there & we hydrated with fresh fruit smoothies:
We kept the adventure going with another hike at the Makapuu Lighthouse Trail. At first the girls were excited, but as we got going it was hot & they were tired. I guess we should have stopped after 1 hike because when we made it to the first lookout point, they crashed:
At this point we can't turn around, right?! So we made them keep going even though they were hot & tired. Luckily it was a paved trail the whole way with beautiful views along the coast, but it was super windy. Eventually we saw our destination ahead:
It was definitely worth it when we got to the top:
And the way down was so much easier, especially when you have your Daddy's hand to help you out:
Our next stop:
I remember stopping here before but the girls had never seen anything like it. They loved it!
Right around the corner was our next stop at Hanauma Bay:
It was partly cloudy & it had sprinkled on & off all day, so it wasn't exactly the warmest weather but we knew the girls would want some beach time & Sadie loves to snorkel. Her & Bryan hit the water while Sophie & I mostly stayed on the beach:
I read while she played in the sand & splashed in the water. Eventually they gave up snorkeling because it was pretty chilly & they played in the sand also. In fact, they played in so much sand they buried Sadie:
Soon after this, it started pouring & we all got soaking wet while we ran back to our jeep. So we cleaned up & headed to dinner at:
It was great! We went right at sunset & sat on the second floor of the patio & had the best view:
I even took a selfie because the evening was so perfect & they gave us a flower when we walked in:
It was the perfect ending to our first day in paradise!
