Diamonds Are A Girl's Best Friend, Part 2

I started writing this post as I am singing the subject line in my head & then I realized that I had this same post back in May 2012. Any guesses why? That's because both of my girls are following in their mother's footsteps & have matching diamond earrings! Ok, maybe not real diamonds, maybe cubic zirconias instead :)

I have always told Bryan, way before we had children, that if we had girls we would definitely get their ears pierced when they are infants. When we talked about it with our pediatrician, she said go ahead! She suggested we go to Sweet & Sassy at the mall because they had 2 guns where they could pierce both ears at the same time. We took Sadie on Mother's Day weekend & didn't tell anyone so we could surprise everyone on Sunday morning. I wanted to do the same thing with Sophie, but we couldn't find the time in our schedule. So, we did it the weekend after Mother's Day, which happened to be her baby dedication at church. So we did the same thing - we didn't tell anyone, got it done on Saturday night & then waited to see if anyone noticed on Sunday morning.

Bryan was the videographer & the photographer while I held Sophie. Sadie was a trooper & watched everything. I was afraid it would scare her, but she was so excited that Sophie was getting earrings like her, that I don't even think it phased her. So, get ready because here are the pictures in chronological order:

Poor girl - look how happy she is! She has no idea what's about to happen.....

This is the typical Sophie pose - she is smiling while holding her hands in the praying position. She was pretty calm for a long time while we marked her ears. My ears were not pierced even, so I made them re-do hers a couple of times with the marker until we got them perfect.

And then she starts to realize something is going on. I had to hold her down in a restraint so she wouldn't wiggle & that was probably worse than the actual piercing:

I think her facial expression above is hilarious because she has no idea what's going on! And the next picture pretty much sums it up:

I think it's funny seeing the expression on my face - I couldn't see her but I definitely heard her! It's funny watching the video because there was definitely a delayed reaction from the time it happens to the time she figures it out. But the good news is that is was over in a few seconds & she cried for less than a minute. As soon as I stood up, walked around & gave her a pacifier, she stopped crying:

I mean honestly, it is no different than her getting a shot at the doctor. And at this age, they will never remember it, but she definitely has the bling to remind her!

I think she looks beautiful & now if I go out in public without a headband on, people won't wonder if she is a boy or a girl :) And my favorite part about it is the fact that Sadie is so proud of her. She has told everyone she knows this week that Sophie has earrings like her!

Man I love these 2 cuties!

  2. Love your blog and fun story of your two girls as a lurker. I've been trying to decide whether to have our six month baby girls ears pierced. Read your recent post about "Diamonds are a girl's best friend, Part 2" and loved your storytelling. Your daughter's new bling is totally adorable and looks as if she was born with earrings. It sure signals she is girlie-girl. Curious how you knew before you were pregnant, "...if we had girls we would definitely get their ears pierced when they are infants."

I always said I would never pierce my babies' ears. I don't know why. It wasn't like I didn't like other babies with pierced ears... it just wasn't my thing. I didn't want my children to ever feel like looks are/was/is a big deal. I had this inner battle since I was at bed rest due to premature labor [I had tons of time to think about it]. The pros and cons seemed about the same, but I kept hearing from some of my GF's that piercing her ears as an infant might be better now avoiding angst and fear of having it done later when they wanted it done seeing all their little friends with earrings.

After reading your positive experience, I've decided to go ahead and have her ears pierced now. Looking at your photos and comments, she seemed to tolerate it well and looks precious with those "diamond studs" in her little ears.
