This past weekend was the first weekend we have been home with no plans & it was nice & relaxing. So nice & relaxing that we decided it was time to start something new with Sadie - her first experience eating! We spoke with our pediatrician a lot at Sadie's 4 month check up & she really recommended we wait to feed her until closer to 6 months of age. She gave us some warning signs that would tell us when Sadie would be ready to eat & I am pretty sure she has been warning us for the past few weeks! But since we were traveling, I was trying to wait until we were home again on a regular schedule. For the past few months she has been sitting at the table with Bryan & I while we eat dinner, so she is very comfortable sitting in her high chair. Also, I started giving her a spoon to play with last week so she would be comfortable with it. I have heard horror stories about children afraid of the spoon once some foreign object started coming towards their mouth. We decided to start with cereal first & then we will work our way to fruits & veggies - yummy!
I have to admit that I was really excited about this new experience & it was kind of uneventful :( I guess she was so prepared that she ate like a semi-pro! The spoon didn't scare her at all - in fact, she kept trying to take it from us & feed herself! And I think she wanted to play with the spoon more than she wanted to eat with it. I was also expecting some funny faces, but she didn't really make any. I guess the cereal didn't bother her too much. Granted she didn't know what to do with it exactly once it got in her mouth, but she tried. I would say about half she swallowed & the other half got on her face & bib. Overall, it was a fun experience for all & not nearly as messy as I imagined. I am sure I will be telling a different story in a few weeks once she starts eating all those brightly colored foods like peas & carrots!
In case you were wondering, yes, I did put her in one of her Texas Longhorn bibs on purpose - just for her Daddy! I figure he will appreciate that 20 years from now when we are looking at these pictures & sharing our stories with Sadie :)
